Knirps rates this game: 5/5A fantastic action-platformer that brings unique mechanics to the table, decent graphics, a story, and challenging gameplay.
Controls are extensive in that the game relies on a set of 5 characters, each with their own attack and special move. Features include jet packs, wall climbing, super jump, and a controllable floating laser ball as well as variable jumps, hit box sizes, and squatting. Controls feel tight and responsive.
Mechanics are standard platformer arrays with a heavy hand on one-shot boss moves and seemingly impossible levels where you need to use your team wisely to find the strengths that can work for you. For example, one character can shoot upwards while another has a smaller hitbox and can squat under enemies.
Sound is good, never got annoyed or turned it off.
Graphics are pretty good, they aged well. The only thing that was a little iffy were the character portraits during 'cutscenes'.
Gameplay centers around a captain and his rag tag team of space...beings and their arch nemesis the toads. The goal of the first half of the game is to find your team members who have been trapped on different planets. After you assemble your team, the second half of the game revolves around taking down the toads for good. As you play through and rescue different team members, you gain access to their special abilities and swap through them semi-fluidly to progress through levels.
This game features a story that can be easily followed.
Overall, I really enjoyed my playthrough of this game and feel it has all the qualities of a fantastic game. I'd recommend this to anyone doing a romp through the oldies.
alanca03 rates this game: 4/5Bucky o Hare is an awesome side scrolling shooter that really rivals Mega Man in gameplay. Good graphics and good music; just expect a huge challenge; this one's really hard. You travel across space trying to rescue your crew- after you save each character- you can play as that character. Really advanced for NES in my opinion.
