How to Play this Game ?
Game Description & Reviews:
"The Force Unleashed" is set between Star Wars Episodes 3 and 4, where you play as Darth Vader's secret apprentice who goes around and reks stuff. I remember the PC version was pretty nice. The controls were pretty responsive, the gameplay was solid and it also had some humor speckled in from time to time (take it easy, it has been a while)
Now, enough with the PC version. The DS version - which I played on a DSi through a flashcart - is... less than an ideal port. Its controls are so clunky that I quit after the tutorial.
The use of the touch screen as your primarily means to deliver (virtual) attacks to your enemies is really, as I see it, a fool's errand. While the screen is pretty responsive for a resistive touch screen, it still has one problem: no clearly-defined borders between each "button" on it. Much like modern android touch controls... except that you have to put more oomph behind each press on the screen. And more often than not, I found myself either not pressing the screen correctly, or pressing between the borders of each button, or even pressing an entirely different button than what I wanted to press.
And then you've got combos... Those are actuated by "dragging" one ability button on top of the other. With all the problems about touch controls on a resistive touch screen. The rest of the controls are ambidextrous. The D-pad moves your character and so do the ABXY buttons. L and R do the same thing.
I can't help but make parallels between this game and others, like Dante's Inferno on the PSP. There, you control your character just fine with all six buttons (four on the face and bumpers) without issue. I'm not at all involved with game designing in any way, but I think I can recognise bad game design (DS version of The Force Unleashed) and good game desing (PSP version of Dante's Inferno) on a handheld.
