This is a really interesting documentary which was originally made in French but features Japanese game developers talking about the history of Shoot 'em ups. They cover everything from Space Invaders right up-to the newer generation video game consoles. Some of the topics covered include how anyone can finish an RPG but real skill is required for these games.

There's a pretty cool retro magazine addition to our Magazine Scans Section today. This time around we added all 7 issues of Blip Magazine:

Blip was a video game "magazine" published by Marvel Comics in 1983 and only lasted 7 Issues. It launched February 1983 and published its final issue in August, thus becoming the first magazine "victim" of the Atari crash. Edited by Joe Claro (who wrote lots of quickie children's books for Random House all during the 1980s), the title was comic-book sized and printed on plain old comic-book stock, making it the cheapest national video-game mag ever (only a buck an issue!) but also the cheapest-looking, as screenshots and color photographs all tended to be washed out and ugly. As a result of this, Blip concentrates less on game strategy and more on "lifestyle"-type things -- comics about games, jokes, stories, and so forth.

I've just added Battle Arena Toshinden (1996) to our Video Game Movies section. We have almost 20 video games movies in there so if you're looking for some entertainment, there's definitely something worth looking at. A short summary of the movie:

For one year, Master Swordsman Eiji Shinjo has been haunted by the memory of his battle with the renegade champion, Gaia. A battle that was cut short by the forces of the malevolent syndicate known as "The Organization."

Denied victory, Eiji left the tournament followed by his opponent's mocking laughter. Worse still, Eiji walked away no closer to finding his long lost brother, Sho. But now, a mysterious warrior is hunting down the champions of the previous tournament and using their own moves against them, and it looks like that person may be Sho. Who is this powerful, new foe and who be his next target? Eiji and Kayin, his closest friend and greatest rival, struggle to unravel the mystery before they too join the ranks of the defeated. The answer lies at the heart of The Organization and its plans for world domination. At last, the ultimate battle between the greatest fighters in the world will be decided. But if Eiji loses, his friend, Ellis, may Die...
