Kouen’s Thoughts on The WiiU

Again I am not interested in a Nintendo Console. That said I could be considered a hipster in that I was hating on Nintendo well before the Wii… Half way through the Gamecube actually.

I Used to love my Nintendo 64 and Gameboy Color, and even my Gameboy advance.. sure you had to sit almost on top of a light source to see it but there you go.

What turned me away from Nintendo all started with the Gamecube line up, when you think back on it had a handful of good titles and both the XBox and PS2 had a 10 to 1 Ratio of good games to bad games in comparison.

Then the DS Hit, which was a (to me) N64 with 2 Screens one being a touch screen. I decided to get the machine and actually didn’t like it much after launch. the touch screen was kind of gimmicky but could have been much cooler and I hated the buttons on the unit. the only developers to take decent advantage of what the NDS could do was Nintendo with few exceptions with the likes of Project Rub by Sega. So I went and got myself a PSP instead and have actually been happy with it ever since.

When the Wii was announced I listened with interest but as soon as they started talking about a little remote you have to wiggle around to make things happen I lost interest. I just couldn’t take it seriously… mental images of me wiggling a white stick in the air to punch “Sub-Zero” in the face made me face palm. aside from like one game I never really wanted to bother with the Wii, and that said one game I was able to play through emulation easy enough (House of the Dead: Overkill if you was curious)

This console to me looks again like the Wii. Trailing behind with the tech (The Wii being not that much more advanced than the Xbox 1 and this one not being that much better than the 360), Will have the near subliminal messaging “lets add a part of the console name to the title” -ness to it (Advance, 64, Wii, super come to mind), and it feels like they was all like “Yo dawg we heard you like Nintendo! So we mixed your DS with a Wii so you can play portable while on the TV!”

Then again maybe this is just all like what the boss says on Dilbert “The Secret to marketing is doing what you did before even though you know it wont work!”

Sure it will get the initial base in place and maybe some people will derp enough to go and buy half there games again even though they own it on there PS3/PC/360. But again like last time the WiiU will be relegated to the “Cut down spin off versions of the cool versions on more capable consoles”

What may hurt Nintendo more is outside of the Zelda / Pokemon / Mario Addicts the console will be promising at the start and fail to deliver later, as Nintendo has always been when you think about it since the N64 a Secondary console. When you ask people what consoles do they own most of the time there like “I Got a Xbox 360, oh and a Wii”

Don’t get me wrong, Tech specs don’t make a good game but if you fall too far behind your going to just get cut down versions.

I’m not a Nintendo “Hater” per say, I want them to do well in fact! but I cant see things ending well with the “we must have gimmicks with our consoles” mentality they got stuck in.

if they release a “Normal” console like everyone else with a “Normal” controller and a spec sheet of a console that could have been produced 5 years ago. I’ll be happy to take a look! but until that time I just cant take them seriously.

Please also note, while I am going to get flack regardless from the disclaimer from Pro-Nintendo people, Realize that this is just MY personal opinion and people telling me “Nintendo are trying to innovate/revolutionize/do something different” is not going to sway my opinion. I Hope Nintendo do well, but what there doing right now is not for me and as such I personally will not buy into it.
