Now, for this article, we are talking about the mainstream. You know, the big three and the ones that bow before them. You will see this in games, but usually indie titles or elsewhere completely. So here are the ten things you won’t see,hear, or do in mainstream videogames.

10. Sex

This is more of an issue with marketability than actual taboo. Major brick and mortar retailers will not carry any title with an A rating. So this limits marketability and sales as a whole. You will get sex scenes, but not the hardcore you would find in titles like Bible Black and BoneCraft.

9. Racism

Remember, this is for the big three only. You won’t see really subversive racism shown in games. No KKK, Neo-Nazi’s, or any other group that puts on lingerie under white sheets will be tolerated. Even remarks that are lightly racist won’t be tolerated. On the other hand shooting someone in the face is perfectly appropriate.

8. Rape

This would be obvious because of the sex comment but really rape and sex are two different things. You won’t see either one portrayed in games because of the offensive and somewhat awkward usage that can be done. While there are games like RapeLay and Battle Raper, you won’t see a mainstream game touch these with a 12 foot pole.

7. Graphic Language

You might get a series of fucks. You won’t get a major publisher to use the words cum guzzling slut anytime soon. As a matter of fact you may not even get to read that if it’s deemed too offensive. We really tip toe around hardcore graphic language and I am sure that it will continue. So if you are expecting to hear Mario call the Princess, “a frigid cock blocker who isn’t worth a whore’s used tampon,” keep waiting cause you won’t.

6. SacrilEgious Elements.

A Lot of games have been censored because of this already. It’s really uncommon that you will find them anytime soon. America’s conservative right has a lot of purchasing power so anything remotely sacrilegious to a real world religion will be censored.

5 Depictions of Current Events.

Just ask Atomic Games what kind of taboo this is. They won’t even give me an interview about this game because it’s that taboo. In other words, turn on CNN and not the X-Box.

4. Real Life Genocide

Oh, you can do this as an indie programmer all day. You can even get major awards, but if you are a member of the big three, it’s a no no. You will never see a game depicting the Holocaust, Rwanda, Bosnia, or any other type of ethnic cleansing. Why? Who really knows but you won’t see it in a big budget game.

3. Comedies

Yeah, comedy doesn’t translate well into games as of right now. You get bits and pieces but overall it’s an ignored genre. Mainly because it’s easier to make people cry instead of laugh.

2. Birth Scenes or Pregnant Characters

I have seen one character that has been pregnant through the entire existence of playing video games. Lulu, in Final Fantasy X-2 is the first one I remember seeing and I haven’t seen any since. Now make note, I said, I as in me. If there are any more please tell me in the comments.

1. Anything Negative About The Industry

Alright, you will never see a game produced trashing the industry. Not one game will be made making fun of the industry or their control, ever. If it is, expect it not to be distributed as a whole by anyone. Which is funny cause all other industries of entertainment often criticize themselves.
