Game Description & Reviews:
Lufia II is an absolute hidden gem of a game! Any fans of old-school RPG's will love it! Great storyline, memorable characters, and fantastic music (especially the boss battle music). I'd give it a 10/5 rating if it were possable!
Lufia II is a classic example of a solid SNES era turn-based RPG.
Everything is pretty standard. You start off as an ordinary guy who fights monsters for a living whent the world gets thrown into turmoil and you are revealed to be the destined hero, along with some friends that join up with you along the way.
You fight monsters in the standard turn-based fasion; you can use a basic attack, cast a spell, or use an item. The twist comes in a unique "IP" bar, which fills when you get hit. You can use IP to release the power of certain items, which can heal the party, deal extra damage, or add an elemental effect to your attack.
Elemental effects are very important in this game. Spells are relatively weak normally, dealing about the same amount of damage as a basic attack. Their real strength comes in when you match up elemental strengths and weaknesses. A fire spell can do 50 damage to an enemy without any affiliation with fire, but to a water enemy it can deal twice that, or more. The opposite would apply when you damage a fire enemy, you could deal just 10 damage, or less!
The game's weakness lies in its puzzles. At first, they are fun and add more to the game, but they can get monotonous. This isn't enough to ruin the game though.
It can be a difficult game at times. Each monster encounter is more of a challenge than other RPGs, but recovery items are cheap and plentiful, so you can refill back to full after each one. Bosses can be grueling encounters, and one in particular is almost impossible unless you have a certain weapon. They can last 5-10 minutes, sometimes even longer.
Overall, I would recommend this game to any RPG fan looking for a good challenge.
Lufia II outlines the prologue to the first game in the series (go check it out, it's also very good). It's the tale of Maxim's crew quest to defend the world against the new treat of the "Sinistrals". It's in a lot of ways an evolution of it's predecessor, together with a set of interesting new mechanics.
The gameplay is a very pleasent mix of Zelda style puzzles with some traditional RPG turn-based battle and exploration.
It also features the "Capsule Monster" system which allows the party to add a computer controlled creature as a fifth member in battle. This creature can be fed itens so it will eventually evolve into stronger forms.
If you're into RPG just play it. You won't regret
